Attractions for People who Hate Rides – Epcot

In this new series I suggest attractions at Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Resort that will appeal to those Guests who dislike traditional amusement park rides. There may be many reasons why someone can’t or won’t get on a ride. They may be too short, too heavy, or too big. They may have medical problems or be pregnant. Or they may just dislike fast rides and long lines. No matter the reason everyone deserves to have a happy time at the Disney parks. The following attractions can be enjoyed by everyone and may even bring a smile to the most reluctant Guest. Today we will explore the Future World at Epcot.

Epcot has two distinct sections: Future World and the World Showcase. Future World contains several pavilions filled with educational and entertaining attractions. Guests who love to go fast will enjoy Test Track and Mission Space, but for those who dislike motion sickness there are many other attractions to explore.

5 Future World attractions for people who hate rides:

1) Innoventions. Innoventions is housed in the two buildings behind Spaceship Earth. Inside you will find computer games, virtual reality experiments, and full size futuristic homes to explore. There are various areas that cover many topics from fire safety to the perfect storm. This is a fun area to visit on a hot humid day where you can be educated and entertained while staying cool indoors.

2) Living with the Land. This slow ride takes you into the greenhouses that Disney uses to experiment with different growing techniques. From hydroponics to growing plants vertically, there is something to impress everyone. How about a 10 pound lemon? I won’t give it all away, but this ride will show you some amazing farming ideas.

3) Turtle Talk with Crush. This show is supposedly geared for toddlers, but I don’t think little kids appreciate the magic that makes this show possible. During this show Crush, the turtle from Finding Nemo, is on a screen and interacts with the audience. The responses are in real time and I always leave wondering how they can make the animation and the dialog match that quickly. Check it out and you’ll be amazed as well.

4) Captain EO. Okay, I admit it. This show is a little hokey, but that is only because it shows how bad 80s hair was. The show itself is a blast. The music rocks, the story is powerful and the Muppets add some humor. Michael Jackson was at the top of his career when he made this 3-D show for Disney. I saw the original show dozens of times when I was a kid and I am so glad they brought it back. You’ll go in jaded and come out singing.

5) ImageWorks. This is part of the Imagination Pavilion and a lot of it focuses on Figment, the purple dragon who encourages you to use your imagination. There are computer areas that focus on sight and hearing. My favorite part is the computers that let you design your own Figment and then email it to yourself and your friends. When you get home you have a great souvenir waiting in your email.

Future World at Epcot is a unique place to explore new technology and it proves that learning can be fun.

Goofy Tip: As you wander around Epcot listen for the sounds of unusual drumming. The JAMMinators play throughout the day (check the event schedule) using metal trashcans and other odd items to bang out fun rhythms. They are very talented drummers and have a routine that is both musical and humorous.
