Do you know ROY G. BIV? Good ol’ Roy isn’t a who, but a what. It is how you can remember the colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. I was thinking about these colors the other day and it made me think of Disney princesses. Certain princesses are known by their color; either the color of their hair, the color of their gown, or some other defining feature. So for seven posts we’re going to have fun exploring the colors of the rainbow, Disney princesses, and fun activities connected to them. Today we start with red which reminded me of Snow White.
Lips red as the rose. Hair black as ebony. Skin white as snow. We must be talking about Snow White. When I thought of the color red I immediately thought of ‘lips as red as the rose.’ When I was a kid I had a cassette that told the movie story, but it started with Snow White’s mother yearning for a child as she sewed. She pricked her finger on the needle and three drops of blood fell to the floor. As they fell she wished for a daughter with hair as black as night, skin as white as snow, and lips as red as the red, red rose. I have never forgotten that beginning.
5 fun facts about Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs:
1) Snow White is the first Disney princess and Disney’s first full-length animated feature. It came out in 1937.
2) The movie was called ‘Walt Disney’s Folly’ by the Hollywood film industry because they were sure it was going to fail. Boy, were they wrong. Not only was the film a smash hit, but Walt Disney got a special Oscar consisting of one large statue and seven little ones.
3) Disney tried out many different names for the dwarfs. Some of the ones that didn’t make it (good thing) were: Biggy-Wiggy or Biggo-Ego, Blabby, Deefy, Dirty, Gabby, Gaspy, Gloomy, Hoppy-Jumpy, Hotsy, Jaunty, Nifty, and Shifty.
4) 25 songs were written for the film but only eight were used.
5) 2 million drawings were make for the movie using 1500 shades of paint. Amazing!
Snow White is not my favorite princess. She never once defends herself against the queen and even when the dwarfs tell her not to talk to strangers she doesn’t listen. However, I do like her because she is so friendly. Everyone likes her, from the huntsman, to the forest animals. In fact, every guy in the movie falls in love with her. Obviously, we can all learn about being a good friend from Snow White. Here are five ideas to help you be a good friend today. Maybe your acts will spread and soon the world will be a more friendly place.
5 ways to make friends like Snow White:
1) Take someone out to lunch. Do you have a neighbor who you don’t really know, or someone you work with that you never say more than hi to? Why not invite them out to lunch and get to know them. It might be the start of a great friendship.
2) Pitch in and help. When Snow White got to the dwarfs’ cottage she started cleaning it up even though she didn’t know who lived there. You don’t have to know someone to help them. Let someone in line ahead of you. Help someone with their groceries. Hold the door for someone. Friendships start with friendly gestures.
3) Volunteer. A great way to make friends who think like you is to meet them while volunteering. Whatever your interest is there is a way to volunteer. It is a friendly thing to do and can be a lot of fun.
4) Make something and give it to others. Bake cookies for your work. Make table decorations for a senior center. Design bookmarks for your book group. Making something and then giving it away is a great way to be a friend to old and new acquaintances.
5) Appreciate the friends you have. It’s great to make new friends, but your best friends are the ones you’ve known forever. Write them a letter or give them a phone call. If they are nearby invite them out to lunch or do them a favor you know they’ll like.
There are a million other ways you can be a friend. Try one out today and spread the word – friends are the best! Happiness squared.
Goofy Tip: My favorite place relating to Snow White is not on Snow White’s Scary Adventures (although it is a great dark ride), but at Snow White’s Grotto in Disneyland. This area is next to the castle on the Fantasyland side. It is a terrace with statues of Snow White and the seven dwarfs. In front of this lovely scene is a wishing well just like the one Snow White used in the movie. Don’t rush away. Make a wish and wait. Soon you’ll hear Snow White singing at the well. Magical.
