Happy 4th of July!
I’ll admit that I have never spent Independence Day at a Disney Park. For my family this was a day for backyard cookouts and parades of sparklers around the pool. I could give you lots of reasons why I never even considered going to a Disney park on the 4th of July – too many people, long lines, unbearably hot, and did I mention too many people. But then I started learning about the great patriotic events that happen at the parks. Perhaps it would be worth the hassle.
Were I to go I would be sure to bring the right frame of mind. It is going to be hot so I would dress appropriately and drink lots of water. I’d go slow and focus on seeing those things that are special to the day instead of trying to ride every ride (impossible and frustrating). And I would dress in my best red, white, and blue finery (perhaps with a new Mickey Mouse patriotic shirt) so I become part of the celebration.
And what would I make sure to see? Here are 5 patriotic events that make going to the Disney parks on Independence Day worth it.
5 Reasons to visit the Disney Parks on the 4th of July:
1) The Flag Retreat This moving event happens every day at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom, but on the 4th of July I would not miss it. They choose military men and women to help with the ceremony and there is a small band that plays patriotic tunes and the Star-Spangled Banner. This is an ideal way to honor how we came to be free nation.
2) The Hall of Presidents This attraction, found at the Magic Kingdom, is fun to see at any time, but has great meaning on the 4th of July. It was in the Declaration of Independence that we told the world we didn’t want a king to rule us anymore. Instead we wanted ordinary citizens like us who we could vote in and who we could remove if necessary.
3) The American Adventure Pavilion There is so much at this World Showcase pavilion to get you in the spirit of the 4th that it could be its own post. Check the event schedule so you don’t miss any of these great events: The Spirit of America Fife and Drum Corp, the Voices of Liberty, and the American Adventure attraction. When you walk out of the theatre you’ll be busting your buttons with American pride.
4) The Patriotic Meet and Greets While you are at the American Adventure Pavilion keep an eye out for some famous characters, and I don’t just mean Mickey and Minnie. Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, and other historic figures will be there throughout the day. And yes, Mickey and the Gang will be there too, dressed in their most festive outfits.
5) The Fireworks Whichever park you are in there is a fireworks show near you. On the 4th of July these shows get a patriotic theme. Since it wouldn’t be Independence Day without fireworks make sure you catch one of these amazing displays. It’s the perfect way to end a perfect day.
I hope your Independence celebrations are spectacular no matter where you are celebrating.
Goofy Tip: The Voices of Liberty is an amazing singing group usually found at the American Adventure Pavilion at the World Showcase in EPCOT. This group of men and women dress in period clothing from throughout American history and sing classic American songs. This summer the Voices of Liberty can also be found at Disneyland performing at the Main Street Opera House. If you are there on the 4th I wouldn’t miss them. And if you are there any other time this summer check the schedule and enjoy this musical tribute to America.
