When Being Goofy Isn’t Enough

IMG_0425When I completed Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge at the 2012 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend (I finished the half marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday) I heard about an unofficial challenge called the Dopey. Some runners had run the 5k on Friday along with the half and the full on the weekend. This was not an official challenge and there was no special medal, just lots of bragging rights.

In 2014 that is changing. RunDisney is adding a 10k race to the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and they are making the Dopey official. Would you like to earn six medals in one weekend? If you run the 5K Family Fun Run, the Minnie 10K, the half, and the full you will earn a medal for each race, a medal for completing Goofy’s Race  and a Half Challenge and a medal for completing the Dopey Challenge. Anyone who completes all 48.6 miles deserves all this bling!

I love to earn medals and I am very proud of my Goofy accomplishment. When I was doing the Goofy I was in awe of those who were doing the Dopey. Now that there are four races to do I am even more impressed. However, I will not be signing up to earn my Dopey medal. It’s not that I don’t want it, because I do. It is because one of the reasons I love to run at the Disney parks is so I can visit the Disney parks. The races are fun, but they are time consuming and I would rather spend more time riding my favorite attractions than running on more days. If I visited more often or lived closer I’d feel different, but for now I’ll just cheer those who are strong enough to do the Dopey as I ride The Hollywood Tower of Terror. Now that’s dopey! Happiness squared.

Goofy Tip: If  you like to run or run/walk but think that a runDisney race is too expensive (they tend to be $75 or higher to register) there are two reasons why you should sign up. One, runDisney races are some of the most organized races I have ever done. This is very important if you are a beginner. They are also a lot of fun and have awesome medals. You get what you pay for. Second, you get a discount on your resort and park tickets. This discount is good for everyone in your party, runners and spectators. The savings is significant and can make a Disney vacation very affordable.
